south africa as people gather outside his home. the leader died yesterday at the age of 95. for a third morning in a row it's freezing in the bay area and there's rain in the forecast today. maybe even a little snow. for more on that here's lawrence. >> that cold air getting trapped in the bay area. we have an approaching system and yeah, we could see some no in our local mountains. it is mostly clear and very cold maybe not quite as cold in some spots this morning but still, down to 24 degrees in santa rosa. 39 in san francisco. 29 livermore. freeze warnings until 9 a.m. today and then we may catch a brief break but they may be reissued again saturday night into sunday. looks like by the afternoon, we'll see some changes coming our way today a clear start to the day but by the middle of the day we'll notice clouds rolling in a chance of rain developing later on this afternoon and tonight and that could mean a little snow maybe as much as 2 to 4" of snow over

some of our local mountains. now, we want to check in with our cold weather expert, kiet do. he has been out there all week long in the cold. hey, kiet, you can go to snow this weekend. >> reporter: can you believe it? how many days have we been out here 2, 3, 4? i lose count. >> yeah. >> reporter: i'm excited we are getting some snow. it may not be down to san jose level but you can check it out in the mountains. you might see it this weekend. not as much frost today as there was yesterday. check it out. i think we found the only car in san jose that has some frost here. but i'm thinking that because we have a couple of days of subfreezing temperatures that's pretty much wrung out all the moisture of the sky even though temperatures are down to the 20s. i'll tell how is making some money. people selling things that are helping people cope with cold

mandela's home in johannesburg. the former south african president died at the age of 95. since then hundreds gathered to pay tribute to his life and littlecy. cbs reporter susan mcginnis with how the entire world is reacting to mandela's death. >> reporter: south africans sang and danced out sight nelson mandela's home in johannesburg. reporter: the outpouring began in the middle of the night when word spread that the man they called madiba which means father died. >> i was sad. but i'm also happy he gets to rest in peace. >> reporter: mandela spent 27 years in prison because he fought against apartheid. south africa's system of legalized racism. but as desmond tutu noted this morning he forgave those who imprisoned him. >> this one has become a global icon symbol of reconciliation. >> reporter: upon his relief

mandela would go on to become south africa's first black president in 1994. years later, he would meet the man that would become america's first black president. >> we've lost one of the most influential courageous good human beings that any of us will share time with on this earth. no longer belongs to us. he belongs to the ages. >> reporter: not far from the white house, mourners gathered at mandela's statue outside south africa's embassy. >> intellectually i think we try to prepare ourselves but emotionally it's not that easy. >> reporter: flags at the white house and other federal buildings will fly at half- staff in honor of mandela through monday. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. four months after he was released from prison, nelson mandela visited the united states and more than 70,000 people packed the oakland coliseum to see him back in june of 1990. kpix 5's anne makovec in the newsroom with memories of his bay area connections. reporter: the east bay

played a key role in the anti- apartheid movement and local leaders are remembering his visit and legacy this morning. >> it is you, you the people of oakland the people of the bay area who have given me and my delegation progress to continue the struggling. >> reporter: that was mandela speaking at the packed oakland coliseum the final stop on his 1990 u.s. freedom tour. then congressman ron dellums was the first to introduce anti- apartheid legislation back in 1972 and seven years later the city of berkeley became the first in the nation to divest from south africa. assemblywoman nancy skinner was part of that movement. >> it was so thrilling that we americans, that we east bay residents, could have been part of something with that kind of global impact. >> reporter: a lone rose left at an oakland monument memorializing mandela last night a reminder of the impact the leader will always have.

north bay compute. southbound and northbound 101 in sausalito. as you can see, things look good right now if you are heading towards the golden gate bridge. nothing but green on our sensors from redwood city down into palo alto. heading out of milpitas for silicon valley commuters things are obviously still moving at the speed limit there. bart looks good. bart has more than 30 trains on time. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." back to you. a special task force will conduct an independent review of a racial harassment of a san jose student. four white students are accused of tormenting their black roommate. a task force set up by the university president will look into existing rules and make recommendations for changes. retired judge ladoris cordell will lead that task force. new details in the state's high-speed rail project. the board will refile a motion to sell bonds for the work.

they are hoping to sell more than $8 billion worth of it. but a similar move was blocked by a judge last week. the board said the motion was rejected due to lack of detail so they are resubmitting it with more information. governor brown has a strong approval rating as he heads into a possible re-election campaign. yesterday numbers show a field poll finds nearly 6 in 10 registered voters approve of his performance. 52% say they would vote for him. his closest challenger lieutenant governor able maldonado is backed by 11%. the governor hasn't said if he will seek another term. 5:08. it's the return of batkid coming back to the city. this time he is helping others. we'll tell you coming up. >> and caltrain is rolling into the holiday spirit. the christmas train is getting ready to make stops this morning for a good cause. >> freezing temperatures outside again. first it was the cold, now we have some rain maybe snow coming up. we'll talk about it. >> and if you are heading

they have been having problems the last couple of days but nothing reported today. bart systemwide also on time. remember "kcbs traffic" once you hit the road, tune to kcbs radio 740-am and 106.9-fm. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." still cold outside. >> yes, back to the deep freeze again around the bay area maybe not quite as cold as some spots but these temperatures again very, very cold. several days now of freezing temperatures outside. 25 in fairfield. 26 in the napa valley. 24 now in santa rosa. and just hovering above freezing in san jose. so another cold start to the day but we have some changes ahead. clouds going to be rolling in. and then a chance of showers developing this afternoon. maybe a little snow over our mountaintops too and then temperatures slowly warm as we head in toward next week. but that cold air still remains locked in place at least for another day or so. then it looks look it will start to moderate towards sunday and monday but you also have a system that's going to slide down the back side of this trough bringing with it a chance of rain later today maybe a little snow over

mountaintops. traveling around the state 50s into the central valley watch out for the rain in far northern california. and then looks like those showers beginning to develop into the afternoon hours so those clouds start to roll in and i think for the evening commute maybe scattered showers nothing too heavy then likely to pick up a bit overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. with that in mind, all that cold air already trapped in place so winter weather advisory is going up over the east bay hills and also the santa cruz mountains. could see 2 to 4 inches of snow overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. headed to the high country not a bad idea. grab the chains and take them up there. they are talking about heavy snowfall up to 2 feet across some of the higher peaks. temperatures for us will be on the chilly side again. only 40s and some 50s outside. and then as we look over the in ex-couple of days -- next couple of days, cold saturday night and sunday. another hard freeze and toward monday and tuesday temperatures start to warm up and maybe more showers but not as cold as we

head toward late next week. >> that's good. >> i would love to see the snow on the mountains. >> love that. >> thank you. it is 5:17. new details on the summer's devastating "rim" fire. federal officials are now expected to file charges against the person they believe started that fire. a hunter is accused of starting an illegal campfire in the stanislaus national forest that got out of control. the tuolumne county district attorney announced yesterday that federal prosecutors privately declared their intent to charge that hunter. a pilot flying from salinas to auburn had to act fast to save his life. he found a place to come down safely in the sacramento area. steve large shows us how the man walked away from the crash- landing. reporter: the crumpled plane on the back of a flatbed truck was driven away from its crash site. its exit far less dramatic than how it got here. a crash-landing. people at the park watched with amazement. >> oh, my! >> reporter: how fearful were you?

mandela. the former south african president died yesterday just moments ago south african president jacob zuma announced a state burial for mandela on december 15. taking a live look now at a memorial outside his home in johannesburg, you can see many people gathering there. they are leaving flowers, praying, and dancing all in celebration of his life. andrew spencer on the overwhelming show of affection for him. >> reporter: in bold letters outside the apollo theater in memory of nelson mandela, he change our world. >> god must have spent a whole lot of time in making nelson mandela. >> reporter: at a chanukah event at the white house, president barack obama took another moment to acknowledge what the world lost. >> a moral giant who embodied the dignity and the courage and the hope and sought to bring about justice not only in south africa but i think to inspire millions around the world.

>> reporter: he wasn't the only one to reflect on mandela's death. >> he was an inspiration. >> an extraordinary man a gentle giant. he is the kind of individual that the words that he spoke were so profoundly challenging to your spirit. >> he wanted to persuade the people of south africa as a whole that they did not have to be afraid of fundamental change in the country. >> reporter: cnn's twitter tracker showed news of his death spread throughout the world at nearly 100,000 tweets a minute. actor samuel l. jackson wrote, never met a better person in my life than nelson mandela. my sympathy to his family and country. others remember the man who meant so much to so many by laying flowers in his honor at the south african embassy in washington where the flag was lowered to half-staff. i'm andrew spencer reporting. >> in june of 1990, four months

and continue the struggle. >> reporter: andria turner sang for him that day if the choir. >> i cried. i really -- so did so many other people. i mean, so many. it was like you know you struggle but you never see when the circle comes together. and -- and -- and you finally win one. >> reporter: the bay area played a keyhole in mandela's fight, then congressman ron dellums was the first to introduce anti-apartheid legislation back in 1972 and seven years later the city of berkeley became the first in the nation to divest from south africa. congresswoman barbara lee worked with mandela on several issues including the campaign to eradicate hiv aids. >> he convinced me that cynicism and that, uhm, bitterness and that anger was -- these were obstacles to progress and that even with the hostilities and the suffering,

parents' home in 1993. but they didn't report her missing until 2007 because she was a runaway a number of times. >> you know how some teenagers have difficult times and kori was one of those teenagers who just didn't adjust or fit in real well. >> the murder is still unsolved. police have identified two persons of interest. but they are asking for the public's help in bringing a killer to justice. some other headlines around the bay area on this friday now. cold weather may have been responsible for this water main break overnight in martinez. it happened last night around 10:30. the main thoroughfare that goes through martinez. the water is shut down but it did create quite a mess with water going into a number of yards and garages. police in hercules are looking for a possible serial burglar. at least 8 burglaries have been record over a three-week period. most of them happened in an area called the birds. in every instant, a door was pried open. the proximity of the break-ins has led police to believe they

may all be connected. new this morning, an investigation is begun into the construction of a barge by google on san francisco bay. the bay conservation and development economics will determine whether google and the owners of a pier on treasure island have the necessary permits. google says it is already making changes requested by the coast guard. google reportedly plans to open a floating retail store. wall street will be reacting this morning to the new employment numbers out of washington. the november jobs report is just in. alexis christoforous of cbsmoneywatch.com joins us now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we could be in for a very strong open here on wall street because the economy added a better-than-expected 203,000 jobs last month. wall street was expecting 180,000. the unemployment rate fell to 7% from 7.3%. that is better than expected. and that report may convince the fed to finally scale back

its stimulus program. not necessarily something wall street wants to see happen. nevertheless, stock futures are reacting. they are pointing to a higher open. yesterday the dow fell for the fifth straight day down 68 points and the nasdaq slipped 4. los angeles is suing wells fargo and citigroup for mortgage discrimination. l.a.'s attorney general claims the bank's practices led to a wave of foreclosures in black and hispanic neighborhoods driving down property values and costing the city hundreds of millions in tax dollars. it's also more expensive to finance a home this week. according to freddie mac, the average rate on a 30-year fixed loan jumped to 4.46% from 4.29% last week. the rate on a 15-year loan increased to 3.47%. well, brace yourself because milk prices could double next year to $7 a gallon. that's if congress doesn't reach an agreement on a new farm bill by january 1. and it's not just milk we're talking about. we could see higher prices for other dairy products like
